Department of Commerce and Research Center

The faculty of Commerce was established in 1971 with the sole aim of providing commercial education to the rural students. In the year of establishment, the faculty had just 20 students and one staff member. This picture has totally changed now. At present 449 students are pursuing their studies at undergraduate, post graduate and research level at the able guidance of 08 teachers. With the increase in student’s strength and looking at the future requirements, steps have been taken to widen the infrastructure facilities and create an ambience for excellent teaching, learning and other personality development activities of the learners. 07 staff members are Ph.D. holders, 3 are M.Phil. Degree holders, 2 are NET and 2 are SET qualified. The faculty offers 3 career oriented certificate courses at U.G. level faculty. In addition to conventional method of teaching, charts, internet, LCD, field projects are also used as and when required. Field studies and excursions are arranged to acquaint students with the real picture in their study. Feedback from students and others reflect the level and scope for further improvement. Besides learning in theory classes, students also learn themselves by using computers, internet services, debating competitions, tutorials/homework, and project work assigned to them, also help in independent learning. The subject knowledge of students is evaluated through internal tests, group discussions, oral tests and assessment of practical work, project work, tutorials. Final evaluation is through the University examinations conducted at the end of semester for the courses run under semester pattern and at the end of academic year for courses under annual pattern. Research activity has gone up in the last five years. All teachers are actively involved in research activity. During the last of five years 75 research papers have been published by the faculty members in national, international UGC Approved journals having good impact factors and ISSN. Faculty members have completed 01 major and 10 minor research projects. During the last five years 12 books have been published by the faculty members. Commerce department has recognized research center with 10 research guides. So far 23 students have got their doctoral degree from SavitribaiPhule Pune University and 26 students are at present enrolled for Ph.D. The faculty organized workshops, seminars, guest lectures and lecture series to keep abreast in various fields. Since inception, the faculty has proved its caliber by attracting good number of students and sending its output with good placements.

At present 440 students are pursuing their studies at undergraduate, post graduate and research level at the able guidance of six teachers. With the increase in student’s strength and looking at the future requirements, steps have been taken to widen the infrastructure facilities and create an ambience for excellent teaching, learning and other personality development activities of the learners. Four staff members are Ph.D holders. 2 are M.Phil degree holders and 3 are Net/Set qualified. The faculty offers 3 career oriented certificate courses at U.G. level. P.G. and research facilities enable the students to scale academic heights on the same campus. Keeping in tune with the changing scenario in the field of education, the faculty has introduced Computer Application as a vocational course from 2004. In addition to conventional method of teaching, charts, internet, LCD are also used as and when required. Field studies and excursions are arranged to acquaint students with the real picture in their field of study. Feedback from students and others reflect the level and scope for further improvement. Besides learning in theory classes, students also learn themselves by using computers, internet services, debating competitions, tutorials/homework, and project work assigned to them, also help in independent learning. Students learn a lot during tours. The subject knowledge of students is evaluated through internal tests, group discussions, oral tests and assessment of practical work, practical records, and project work/tutorials. Final evaluation is through the University examinations conducted at the end of semester for the courses run under semester pattern and at the end of academic year for courses under annual pattern. Research activity has gone up in the last five years. All teachers are actively involved in research activity. Commerce department is recognized as research center by the Savitribai Phule Pune University. In commerce department there are three research guides. So far 10 students have got their doctoral degree from Savitribai Phule Pune University and 21 students are at present enrolled for Ph.D. Not limiting themselves to only teaching, the staff members are also engaged in research work. So far 5 minor research projects have been completed. At present one major research project proposal and three minor research project proposals have been submitted to UGC for sanction. The staff members have also published nearly 12 research papers in the National and International journals and also presented their research findings in the National and International Seminars/Conferences. The faculty also organizes workshops, seminars or conferences, guest lectures and lecture series to keep abreast in various fields. About 24 such programmes ( 3 seminars, 1 workshop, 20 lectures ) have been organized in the last five years. Since its inception, the faculty has proved its caliber by attracting good number of students and sending its output with good placements.
