Department of Computer Science

Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and telecom engineer Sam Pitroda had a very huge dream Nation should be digitized in 20th century. With same vision Padmashri Vikhe Patil College has started Department of Computer Science in June 1987 benefited to rural masses and is one of the earliest computer science departments in Savitribai Phule Pune University.

The department had started B.Sc. Computer Science programme with nineteen students and two computers. Day by day, due to the popularity of under graduate course and requirement of industry M.Sc. Computer Science was started in June 2000.Again uniqueness of computer with affordability of rural youth, the need of additional division was started in July 2006 for UG and in June 2007 for PG. Currently, it has 27 faculty members in which 02 has been awarded PhDs, 13 has qualified SET exam and 05 has qualified NET exam. Overall 744 students are working towards their Bachelors and Masters degrees. It has 08 well-equipped laboratories with 156 computers for Computer, Mathematics and Electronics Science with proper UPS backup.

Computer Science is a study of the theory, experimentation that forms the basis for design and use of computers. It is the scientific and practical approach to computation and its applications and systematic study of the feasibility, structure, expression and mechanization of the methodical procedures that underlie the acquisition, representation, processing, storage, communication of, and access to, information.

The Department of Computer Science offers programs of study related computing, information technology and software design and its applications.

One of the strengths of the department is its strong entrepreneurial culture and many students have successfully involved themselves in creating entrepreneurial ventures some of which have gone fully commercial within a short span of time. While some students benefit from on-campus technology business incubator provided by institute, some others choose to create virtual organizations to keep the costs low and later move on to regular business models. In addition they actively participate in selection for off-campus programs. Also some students are in academic portfolio.

Department has good library consisting of 250 books for UG and PG with 05 magazines. Department has conducted software exhibition Techno-Ustav which has given exposure to all round development of students to make the competent individuals.

To enhance the knowledge and awareness in field of computer, the department has organized 02 National Level seminars and 01 University Level workshop. Apart from this 35 research papers have been published in National and International journals and also presented in seminars, conferences.

In addition to this, the department has conducted the computer literacy programme for entry level students of B.A. and B.Com. Such a program may improve the student’s motivation, performance and the practical experience gained may aid the students in choosing future areas of interest. Also Departmental staff has been participating in every activity of college and PRES like, Website Design, maintenance, Work Compliance System,Pravara MIS, ERP module for inventory, software for online admissions, create the background preparation for placement and campus selection of students.

Apart from the academic curricular, department plays supportive role in conducting courses like Cyber Security for post graduate students of other departments.

Students are motivated for active participation in various software competitions organized at intercollegiate and university level. Students bagged prizes for the same.

In the recent past, we had benchmarked our curriculum with select institutions of higher learning around the word such as M.Sc. Computer Science students are sent to Industrial Training for fostering their skills in IT market and currently we are carefully reviewing the impact of these consequent changes with a view to make our programme even more strong and competitive.
