Department of Zoology

The department of Zoology was established in 1971 and is one of the leading departments of Padmashri Vikhe Patil College, Pravaranagar, which offers academic programmes at UG, PG and Ph. D. (Research) level. The Department is sponsored department by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India under the program DST-FIST (2008) and recognized as a Star Department from DBT-Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India in 2007 and 2020-2021.

At present the department conducts teaching program in Zoology at U.G. level under two streams Non-restructuring and Restructuring, and Post Graduate in Zoology (Entomology). The PG programme was started in 1993 on self-financing basis to facilitate the rural students and pursue higher studies to fulfill their dreams. The Department is recognized as a Research Centre in 2007 for Ph. D. program, where two students have been completed their research and awarded by Ph.D. Degree from SPP University Pune and 22 students are pursuing their Ph.D. research degree. The Department is actively engaged in research and provides consultancy services in various fields like Sericulture, Vermi-culture and Apiculture. The department conducts certificate courses in Sericulture under COC and skill-based courses in Vermitechnology and Organic Bio-flock Fish-culture. The Department has diversified teaching and research to suit both recent advances and needs of the regional populace. Department have established MoU’s and Linkages with several National and International Universities and Research groups in teaching, research and extension.

The Department has successfully Organized National and International Conferences / Seminars and Workshops on various emerging issues like International Conference on Recent Trends and Challenges in Science & Technology (RTCST-2014 Pravaranagar) sponsored by UGC New Delhi, State level Seminar on Recent Trends in Life Sciences sponsored by BCUD, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, and National workshop on Implementation of National Education Policy-2020 (Multidisciplinary Education) in 2023.

The Department has diversified teaching and research to suit both recent advances and needs of the regional populace. Currently the department has 13 teaching and 3 non-teaching staff, out of which 1 is Professor and 2 are Associate Professor. One teaching staff is Ph.D. and Post-Doctorate from University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, 5 are Ph.D. and 3 are NET/SET Qualified and are pursuing their Ph.D. degree. Four staff members of the department are recognized as PG teacher and are research guide for M. Phil and Ph. D. degree. The staff members of the department have published 14 books and more than 245 research papers in various national / international repute, peer reviewed journals and proceedings and have completed 3 research projects (minor).

The department is actively engaged in research and significant research contributions are being made by the department in diversified field – biodiversity, physiology, biochemistry, parasites, fishery, toxicology, environmental pollution, and entomology and pest control. The department is actively engaged and generated funds from various funding agencies like UGC, DBT, DST, Govt. of India. New Delhi and BCUD, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. Till the Department has received a grant Rs. 82,54408/-, (Rs. 41,17,204/- from various funding agencies; Rs. 20,00,000/- from DST-FIST life sciences programme during 2008-2011; Rs. 12,35,204/- from DST- FIST ‘0’ level in 2013, Rs. 87,000/- from DST-FIST and Rs. 8,15,000/- from UGC/ BCUD, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune for minor research projects. Currently two projects have been submitted to DST-FIST, Govt. of India under PG College and repair and Maintainance.
