Department of Geography


The department of Geography started since the establishment of the college in 1971. It has a devoted faculty, committed to the high standards of teaching. Both, theory and practical courses are being conducted in the department. The courses belong to either physical or human Geography. As a part of the practical course, the department organizes study tours at different places of Geographical interest in the country. The interdisciplinary courses are being taught in the department. The department's commitment to basic and applied teaching encourages students to go for higher education as well as for research activities. Besides, Geography is one of the major subjects in various competitive examinations and hence, students find it useful to study for the preparation of the same.

The department has two well-equipped laboratories and a staff room. Surveying instruments, 3-D models, weather instruments, wall maps, , Survey of India toposheets, tracing tables, weather maps, charts, computer lab with high speed internet connectivity and essential furniture is available in the UG and PG laboratories. The departmental library has one hundred and ninety six books and issues of research journals viz. The Deccan Geographer, Journal of Institute of Indian Geographer- Transaction and Maharashtra Bhoogolshastra Sanshodhan Patrika. The department offers a bachelor degree course (B.A., in Geography) at undergraduate level and master degree course (M.A. in Geography) at post-graduate level. Considering the infrastructural facilities and staff available for the students to pursue Ph. D studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University has approved our department as a Research centre in 2021. At present five students are doing research work under the supervision of three research guides in the areas of Agricultural Geography, Dairy Development, Watershed Management and Horticulture etc.

The UG students can choose Geography as a special subject in the second year at UG level. Keeping in tune with the changing scenario in the field of education, the department has introduced a Career Oriented Course entitled Certificate Course in Travel and Tourism and Foundation Course in Moral Values. These courses are sponsored by UGC. Along with the conventional methods of teaching, interactive board, LCD projector, geographical models, internet, maps, charts are used for making the teaching more effective. Village survey, field visit, study tours and industrial visits are organized to provide the practical knowledge to the students. Open discussions and feedbacks from the students provide further scope for up-gradation. In addition to class room learning, tours, excursions, library, internet, seminars, guest lectures are the other means of learning in the department. The effective methods like group discussions, seminars, assessment of journals, tests, tutorials, tour reports and projects are helpful to evaluate the students.

Geography Day was celebrated on 14th January every year. On the occasion of Geography Day, the department of geography has organized various competition like poster presentation, eassy wiring, power point presentation,Dr. balasaheb Vikhe Patil Talent search competition etc. for students. This activity is a core part of department of geography. To mark the Birth Anniversary of the noted Indian Geographer, Chandrashekar D. Deshpande and his valuable contribution towards the Geography subject, 14th January is celebrated as Geography Day.The main objective of celebration of Geography day is to make our students aware about the natural resources and environment. Students understand the basic physical systems that affect everyday life and the relationship between human and environment.

The staff members are actively engaged in research and extension activities. A good number of research papers have been published in peer reviewed, UGC care list National and International journals. with Citation Index- 597, h-index-21 and i10 index-23. They have also presented research papers in the seminars and conferences. Five Patent were published in various sectors by faculty. In all five minor research projects sponsored by BCUD, SPPU, Pune and UGC, New Delhi are completed by the faculty.

Recently, the department has organised an International Conference on 12-13 January 2024. Near about 235 abstracts were received and 242 participant attended the conference . One Hundred Thirty two full length papers received for the conference are published in Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Agriculture and Rural Development and Geographical Perspectives on Environment ISBN books.
